So Wim wants to have SARS-Cov2 injected …?!? That’s what a Dutch newspaper seems to say. I can’t read the entire article so I will react cautiously. Indeed, we do not know on what tone Wim said that. Maybe he was joking. Perhaps it was second degree that was taken out of context. And of course, maybe he was totally serious. It seems that many readers take it seriously. This is why, if it is the case, I would just like to say why, and with all the respect that I have for Wim, I think that it is an idea at the same time worthless and rather bad. At the risk of disappointing some. But hey, it is good to sit and think calmly.
Worthless: because it will never happen. There are ethics committees that oversee medical research, and no research laboratory will inject an infectious agent into a subject, even if it is voluntary. Wim’s admirers often refer to the famous “endotoxin study” (PNAS 2014). But in this study, the subjects had an injection of bacterial endotoxin, a bacterial extract stimulating the immune response. There was no injection of live bacteria capable of infecting their host. In short, Wim will not be infected in “lab” condition. Maybe he can ask a patient to sneeze on him? But then, it will have to be tested, follow its symptoms, its viral load etc and hospitals will not lend themselves to this game, it would make no sense. They have other things to do.
Idea rather “nah…”: Wim is at the base of a method which can benefit (almost) everyone. No doubt. I have trained a lot of people and I see smiles at each training. However, Wim is particularly prepared. He has been practicing for 30 years, with incredible passion and diligence and discipline. So if he passed the Covid-19 injection test (even if it won’t happen, see above), would that make sense to the majority of people? We would have “n = 1”, where “n” is a super-athlete of immunity, or at least presumed. It is as if we were invaded by very fast zombies and that we asked Usain Bolt to prove that humans can get away with it through the practice of running. This would not prove that it is not possible, but it would not be proof of great interest for ordinary people.
Idea really “nah…”: In addition, personally, I would be afraid that it would give bad ideas to unprepared people, who would not only risk their health on the basis of belief, but especially who would risk to participate in the spread of the virus towards weak people … I think people are often pretty lazy by nature. When Wim impresses by climbing Everest, few will imitate him by going to Nepal. But if it is enough, to imitate it, to leave your home and not pay attention to others, I am afraid that this will create more vocations. Which seems rather a bad idea if we want to flatten this f#ck!ng curve. Happy breathing!
